Another local project from the “If you build it, they will come” school of planning:
Kansas City park officials on Tuesday approved a $7.85 million contract to build an exhibit for the long-awaited return of beloved polar bears to the zoo.
Now all they have to do is find polar bears — and you can’t get them on eBay.
True — you have to go to Craigslist to obtain large beasts of that sort. Or go to Tunisia.
They are protected as marine mammals and last year received the added layer of being listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. So, even though climate change is melting their Arctic Sea ice habitat and many polar bears are starving, they cannot be collected from the wild.
“We’d be doing them a favor if we could go up there and get some of them,” said Bob Lewellen, a Friends of the Zoo board member.
Hmm. Apparently Lewellen subscribes to the Angelina Jolie/Madonna approach to zoology. Adopt…er, collect them to save them!
